Safer Buildings for Our Community
The Williamsville Fire Protection District conducts Life Safety inspections of non-residential buildings — businesses, assembly spaces, schools, and similar occupancies — using the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2015 edition. This nationally recognized standard focuses on protecting people from fire, smoke, and panic by making sure a building can be occupied and, when it counts, safely evacuated.
What We Assess
A Life Safety inspection looks at the features that get people out safely.
Means of Egress
Exits, exit access, and exit discharge — checked for adequate number, capacity, arrangement, travel distance, and clear, unobstructed paths to the outside.
Exit Signs & Lighting
Illuminated exit signage and emergency (battery-backup) lighting so occupants can find and follow the way out even in a power failure.
Fire Protection Systems
Sprinkler systems, fire alarm and detection equipment, and their inspection and testing records reviewed for coverage and readiness.
Fire Extinguishers
Portable extinguishers checked for correct type, placement, mounting, accessibility, and a current annual service tag.
Occupant Load & Capacity
Posted occupant loads for assembly spaces verified against the room area and available exit capacity so a space is never overcrowded.
Fire Separation & Doors
Rated fire doors, self-closers, and fire-resistive separations inspected for proper operation and to confirm they are never blocked or propped open.
Interior Finishes
Wall, ceiling, and decorative finishes evaluated for flame-spread rating so materials do not accelerate the growth of a fire.
Hazardous Areas
Storage rooms, mechanical spaces, and kitchens reviewed for proper protection, separation, and safe handling of stored materials.
Emergency Planning
Written fire safety and evacuation plans, staff training, and — where required — the drills that keep a plan working when it matters.
